Disclaimer: This FAQ is for informational purposes only. Garage doors are the largest moving objects in the home and are under extreme amounts of tension. Only trained, professional garage door technicians should perform any repairs on these systems. Higgins Overhead Door does NOT recommend any person to attempt to repair any garage door or operator; all repairs made by any person are at THEIR OWN RISK. Higgins Overhead Door assumes no liability for any injury or death for repairs or maintenance performed by untrained individuals.

What happens on a typical service call?

All of our service calls are what we call a “complete” service call. No matter why we are there, our technicians will inspect all components of the door and operator, lubricate the door, replace any damaged or soon-to-fail parts, and/or make recommendations based on the current state of your door and operator.

My garage door won’t open. What do I do?

Garage doors that won’t open could be a sign that there may be a broken part in the operator or even a broken spring or cable on the door. Please do NOT try to use the door as this could lead to injury or death. Give us a call today at (219) 663-2231 and set up a service call!

My garage door won’t close. What do I do?

Garage doors that won’t close could be a sign that there is something blocking the safety sensors at the bottom of the door. It could also be caused by another issue. If your door is crooked or jammed up, please do not attempt to fix it yourself and call us immediately. Consult with your owner’s manual for the operator on how to realign your photo eyes or give us a call today at (219) 663-2231 and set up a service call!

My springs only lasted me a few years, what can I do to get a longer life out of the springs?

Today, the garage door is most homeowners’ “front door” and the primary way to gain access to their home. Springs that come with doors are rated for an industry standard of 10,000 cycles (a cycle is one complete up and down of the door). We say that for an attached garage, 10,000 cycles average out to 4-8 years of normal usage before the springs are ready to break. Garage door springs are similar to tires on a car: rated for so many miles and the more you drive per month will mean you reach that rating faster.

My door is extremely noisy; how do I quiet it down?

All garage doors and garage door operators require maintenance. Please follow your owner’s manual for a guide on maintenance or check out DASMA’s safety and maintenance guide here. We recommend that doors are lubricated at least once every 6 months for an attached garage and to have us come out for a service call to inspect all components and give the door some general maintenance. During the service call, your technicians can explain how to lubricate the door and you can purchase a can of lube from them for the next time your door needs it!

How can I clean my dirty door, help protect the factory finish, or how can I paint my door that’s now faded?

Check out Raynor’s guide for cleaning and protecting here and their painting instructions here.

Why does Higgins sell certain brands or certain products?

We here at Higgins Overhead Door follow a simple philosophy: All the products and services we provide should be of the utmost quality for our customers to provide lasting solutions for them. We believe that we shouldn’t compromise on quality to make the sale, and so, we choose only the best that we can provide to our customers. Our Raynor brand doors provide industry-leading warranties and strength backed by the best customer service available. For some other examples, we only sell 24ga minimum pan doors as they are superior to the 25ga/26ga pan doors that other companies provide, all of our doors come with ball bearing rollers vs. the non-bearing plastic rollers other companies provide, and all of our operators come with an additional remote and a keypad.

What is your warranty?

The manufacturers’ warranties vary depending on the product purchased with the basic warranties being 1 year and some warranties for “As Long As You Own Your Home”. Higgins Overhead Door also offers a labor warranty for both service calls and for new installations. What is the current lead time for a new door?

Today, very few doors are “standard” as there are many varying door sizes and many styles, colors, and options to choose from, and so most doors are custom ordered from the manufacturers. Garage doors are also one of the most complex items to manufacture for a home due to all the various components. Because of all this, the lead time is dependent on what type of door you are looking for. Give us a call today at (219) 663-2231 and talk with our sales team to help us better answer that question!
